CNN - Amazing starry time-lapse video of Corfu

Corfu's tourism board should thank Vasilis Metallinos andJohn Miliadis."Corfu Nightscapes -- A Company of Stars" is the pair's stunning five-minute video comprising 60,000 photos taken between 2010 and 2014 by Metallinos.If you're not inspired to head to Greece after seeing it, you probably didn't full-screen this tribute to Hellenic beauty.The music is composed by Miliadis.Metallinos, 29, became interested in astronomy a decade ago and has been practicing astrophotography for the last seven years.What's on his list of must-have equipment and his secrets for capturing a "bigger" moon?He shared that and more with CNN.

The photo above showing a startling fireball appearing to rip apart the night sky was seen during a star observation session at Mount Pantokrator on the Greek island of Corfu. I had set my camera up to get a picture of our small group and before long this brilliant meteor lit up the surrounding landscape. It was approximately -8 magnitude or about 25 times brighter than Venusat its brightest -- so bright that we were bathed in a sea of blue-green light. You can see thereflection on my 16 in (41 cm) telescope, on the table at right-center and on the side of my car. Click here to see a short animation.

Stars and Lightning Over Greece 
 

Explanation: It may appear, at first, like the Galaxy is producing the lightning, but really it's the Earth. In the foreground of the above picturesque nighttime landscape is the Greek Island of Corfu, with town lights surrounding Lake Korrision. Visible farther in the distance are lights from the town of Preveza on the Greek mainland. In the more distant sky a thunderstorm is threatening, with two lightning strokes caught together during this 45 second wide-angle exposure taken in mid-May. The lightning branch on the left appears to be striking near Preveza, whereas the lightning strike on the right appears to be striking near Mount Ainos on the Greek Island of Cephalonia. Much farther in the distance, strewn about the sky, are hundreds of stars in the neighborhood of our Sun in the Milky Way Galaxy. Furthest away, arching over the entire panorama, are billions of stars that together compose the central band of our Milky Way.

Logas Beach on Corfu Island, GreeceMay 04, 2013


The photo above features sedimentary layering at Logas Beach, Peroulades (northern Corfu Island), Greece. It was taken in the early evening of March 23, 2013 -- the landscape is brightened by the waxing, gibbous Moon and by a long exposure. The cliff strata here consist primarily of clay deposits with sand lenses separating the clay. At a number of locations along this beach, wind and waves have undercut the cliff face. WHAT COLOR WAS THE BLUE MOON? Last night, sky watchers around the world witnessed the second full Moon of July. According to modern folklore, it was a "Blue Moon." So much for folklore. In most places, the rising Moon turned red:

Bill Metallinos sends this picture from Corfu, Greece. "The amber-colored Blue Moon rose behind the the Fortress of San Marco while little Constantina, my niece, waved hello to us with her mother and father," he says.

Many people think Moons cannot turn blue. In fact, ash from volcanoes can do the trick. Volcanic aerosols of just the right size, about 1 micron in diameter, scatter all the red out of moonlight and turn the lunar disk blue.

More often, however, the Moon turns red. It happens for the same reason that sunsets are red.  The everyday atmosphere is full of aerosols much smaller than the ones injected by volcanoes. These aerosols scatter blue light, while leaving the red behind.

A red Blue Moon? It may sound absurd, but that's what Blue Moons are all about. Browse the realtime photo gallery for more examples:

The image above shows a magnificent view of the night sky as observed from above Lake Korission on the island of Corfu, Greece on May 13, 2013. Below the glow of the Milky Way, a springtime thunderstorm fires up in the distance. The cloud-to-ground bolts at left are striking the town of Preveza, on the mainland of Greece, some 57 mi (92 km) from my location. Note that the dark streaks within the Milky Way result from interstellar dust lanes that effectively obscure any light emanating from sources that are more distant. To enhance the original quality of this image I stacked 10 photos using specialized pre-processing software.

What happens when 415 astronomy lovers from all over Greece go to Mt. Parnon? You’ve got a great astro-party under the Spartan dark sky with more than 250 telescopes and lots of fun. Watching the magnificence of our galaxy was the most beautiful thing at the party. From the constellations of Sagittarius to Perseus, you just kept watching the spiral arms of our Milky Way.

Mountain Parnon (Greek: Πάρνωνας) is a mountain ridge on the east of the Laconian plain and the Evrotas valley. Its height is 1.940 m. It is visible from Athens above the top of the Argive mountains. The western part is in the Laconia prefecture and the eastern part is in the Arcadia prefecture. Its length is approximately 50 km from north to south and from 15 to 25 km wide from east to west. The highest mountain is Megali Tourla (1940 m)." - Bill Metallinos

EPOD: Two Moons, Two Sizes, Two Colors October 24, 2013

The above two full Moons were shot with the same telescope and camera. The Moon at left was photographed shortly after it rose in August 2010, near the lighthouse of Corfu’s Old Fortress in Greece. This Moon was at apogee -- furthest point from the Earth (252,277 mi or 406,000 km away). At right, the rising full Moon of July 2013 appears to be touching the walls of the New Fortress (also in Corfu). At a distance of 224,936 mi (362,000 km), it was very close to perigee -- closest point to Earth. Since this Moon is about 10 percent closer it appears slightly larger. 

The coloration of these two full Moons is attributable to their proximity to the horizon. When the Moon is low in the sky the shorter wavelengths of visible light (violet, blue and green) are effectively removed from our view by the increased path length of the moonlight that reaches our eyes -- increased scattering by air molecules. The scarlet color of the July Moon results from higher amounts of haze and humidity causing even greater scattering of the moonlight.

EPOD: Mount Pantokrator Sinkholes August 31, 2014

Over the crest of Mount Pantokrator, Greece, lies the most intense cluster of sinkholes in Europe. The 6.2 sq mi (16 sq km) area contains ancient carbonate formations and dolomitic limestone likely created during the Eocene epoch. Mount Pantokrator was uplifted during the continental collision that closed the Ocean of Tethys, 18-12 million years ago. Μηχανή του Χρόνου: Το CNN υποκλίνεται στο «ελληνικό θαύμα». Το βίντεο με την Κέρκυρα που κέρδισε τους αμερικανούς...

Σκαρφάλωνε σε βράχους και πέρασε ατελείωτες ώρες με τη φωτογραφική μηχανή στο χέρι, αλλά ο κόπος του απέδωσε καρπούς. Το βίντεο του Βασίλη Μεταλληνού έκανε το CNN να γράψει ύμνους για τη δουλειά του, αλλά και για την Κέρκυρα, την οποία παρουσίασε με ένα μαγικό τρόπο μέσα από το φακό του. «Νυχτερινά τοπία της Κέρκυρας- Η παρέα των αστεριών» είναι ο τίτλος του βίντεο που έκλεψε τις καρδιές των Αμερικανών. Μέσα σε πέντε λεπτά «περνούν» 60.000 φωτογραφίες του Μεταλληνού υπό τους ήχους της μουσικής του Γιάννη Μηλιάδη. «Ο οργανισμός τουρισμού της Κέρκυρας θα έπρεπε να τους ευχαριστεί», γράφει το αμερικανικό δίκτυο σε δημοσίευμα στην ιστοσελίδα του, που συμπληρώνει πως «αν δεν αντλήσετε έμπνευση για να φύγετε για την Ελλάδα μόλις το δείτε, τότε πιθανότατα δεν παρακολουθήσατε σε full-screen αυτό το αφιέρωμα στην ελληνική ομορφιά». Ο 29χρονος Μεταλληνός άρχισε να ασχολείται με την αστρονομία πριν από περίπου μία δεκαετία, ενώ τα τελευταία επτά χρόνια ασχολείται με την αστροφωτογραφία. Για να φτιάξει αυτό το πεντάλεπτο time-lapse, το πέμπτο που δημιουργεί, ο Κερκυραίος πέρασε ακόμη και 8-9 συνεχόμενες ώρες τραβώντας φωτογραφίες για να πετύχει το επιθυμητό αποτέλεσμα, μερικές φορές σκαρφαλωμένος σε βράχους.

THE GEMINID METEOR SHOWER IS UNDERWAY

This morning, Dec. 13th, Bill Metallinos caught a shadow-casting Geminid fireball streaking over Corfu, Greece:

"I was setting up my telescope when suddenly there appeared a fireball so bright it made my heart beat like crazy," says Metallinos. "Spectacular moment!"

Extreme Bill has captured a nearly surrealistic, saturated impression of the rising Moon over the old town of Corfu. Clouds streaming pass the Moon make it look like an angryJupiter, a seething hot planet orbitering perilously close to its star. This appeals to my sense of the exotically imaginary.teresting? During our star observation last night 21-22 Jan. 2012 at mount Pantokrator at the island of Corfu I put my Canon eos 40D with the ef 15mm to Capture us... after a while a bright Meteor fall from the nightsky about -8mag!! it was so bright that everything around us turn into a shine blue-green color, you can see it on my 16"inch telescope, on the maps on the table, at the Car, even the ground it turns blue!! EPOD: Undulatus Asperatus Clouds Observed Over Corfu Island, Greece July 18, 2013

The photo above showing eerie-looking undulatus asperatus clouds was taken from Corfu Island, Greece. It almost appears as though the sky turned into the sea. These mid-level wave clouds were recognized as a new cloud type and given a special name in 2009. It's been observed that undulatus asperatus have a predilection to form before midday, over areas with little vertical relief, after convective storms have moved through. Photo taken on April 2, 2013.

Η Αστρονομική Εταιρεία Κέρκυρας σε συνεργασία με τον μουσικοσυνθέτη Βαγγέλη Πετσάλη δημιούργησε το Time lapse "Adagio for Stars". Το αποτέλεσμα της συνεργασίας είναι ο συνδυασμός της κλασσικής μουσικής με το Σύμπαν τριγύρω μας ,μέσα από ένα 24ωρο ταξίδι γύρω από την Κέρκυρα,από τo χάραμα μέχρι το ηλιοβασίλεμα ,την ανατολή του φεγγαριού έως την ανατολή του ηλίου. 
Όπως αναφέρει ο Βασίλης Μεταλληνός: "Τα περισσότερα πλάνα πάρθηκαν με την φωτογραφική μου μηχανή Canon eos 40D και με τον σταθερό φακό ef 15mm fisheye, φυσικά δσεν ήταν η μόνη φωτογραφική μηχανή που χρησιμοποιήσαμε, συνολικά χρησιμοποιήσαμε 7 φωτογραφικές μηχανές δύο Canon eos 5Dmk2, μία Canon eos 30D, μία Canon eos 400D, μία Canon eos 350D και μία Canon compact φωτογραφική μηχανή. Ενώ απο φακούς χρησιμοποιήσαμε σχεδόν όλες τις εστιακές αποστάσεις απο 12mm εως 400mm αλλά και ένα μικρό αποχρωματικό τηλεσκόπιο 600mm.

Στο βίντεο υπάρχουν περισσότερες απο 50.000 φωτογραφίες και είναι εξ ολοκλήρου φτιαγμένο μόνο απο φωτογραφίες και όχι απο βίντεο, η προσπάθεια λήψεις των φωτογραφιών είχε ξεκινήσει εδω και 5 χρόνια ενω τα τελευταία 2 χρόνια δουλεύαμε συστηματικά για τον σκοπό αυτο για αυτο και οι περισσότερες φωτογραφίες είναι απο το 2010, 2011 και 2012. Όλες οι φωτογραφίες και όλο το υλικό είναι τραβηγμένο στο νησί των Φαιάκων, στην Κέρκυρα και ουσιαστικά εκφράζει το πάθος μας και την αγάπη για τον νυχτερινό ουρανό και για τα Ουράνια φαινόμενα και αντικείμενα, ελπίζω στο μέλλον να συνεχίσουμε να φωτογραφίζουμε τον όμορφο νυχτερινό ουρανό του νησιού μας και να μπορέσουμε να δημιουργήσουμε και άλλα τέτοια βίντεο ώστε το Συμπαντικό ταξίδι να συνεχιστεί για ακόμα πιο μακριά..."

What's this item about? What makes it interesting? WIf you switch back and forth between today's LPOD and yesterday's you can see the movement of the Moon from upper right to occulting Jupiter just between Venus and the Pleiades. But this image wasn't to provide an illustration of orbital motion, it is just so wonderful that I wanted to share it. This could be the cover for a new book on observing. The Old Town of Corfu, on the Island of Corfu off the western coasts of Albania and Greece, is located in a strategic position at the entrance of the Adriatic Sea, and has its roots in the 8th century BC. The three forts of the town, designed by renowned Venetian engineers, were used for four centuries to defend the maritime trading interests of the Republic of Venice against the Ottoman Empire. In the course of time, the forts were repaired and partly rebuilt several times, more recently under British rule in the 19th century. The mainly neoclassical housing stock of the Old Town is partly from the Venetian period, partly of later construction, notably the 19th century. As a fortified Mediterranean port, Corfu’s urban and port ensemble is notable for its high level of integrity and authenticity.

The American Meteor Society - Viewing the Geminid Meteor Shower in 2014

The Geminid meteor shower is now active and will reach maximum activity on Saturday evening/Sunday morning December 13/14. Activity is currently low with less than 5 meteors per hour appearing from this source.  Rates are usually twice this number but the nearly full moon obscures all but the brightest meteors. Activity will increase each night until maximum activity is reached on the 13/14. After maximum, rates will fall swiftly and Geminid meteors will soon disappear.

（ＣＮＮ） ギリシャの天体写真家が、同国のコルフ島で撮影した天体写真６万枚で構成するタイムラプス動画を制作した。太陽や月や星が空を流れる映像を見れば、コルフ島に魅了されずにはいられない。動画を制作したのは同島生まれのバシリス・メタリノスさん（２９）。２０１０～１４年に撮影した写真を組み合わせて、５分間の動画「コルフ夜景―星のカンパニー」を完成させた。ＢＧＭの作曲はジョン・ミリアディスさんが担当した。メタリノスさんは１０年ほど前から天文学に興味を持ち、天体写真歴は約７年。ＣＮＮのインタビューに応じ、巨大な月をレンズに収める秘密などを語ってくれた。ＣＮＮ：動画制作を思い立ったのは？メタリノス：私のタイムラプス動画はこれで５本目で、生まれ故郷のコルフ島への愛着と、夜空への情熱に駆り立てられた。コルフ島は長く豊かな歴史と息をのむほど美しい光景がある。夢や魔法のような気分で空を見上げて星を眺められる。ＣＮＮ：コルフ島が星空観測に適している理由は？メタリノス：ユネスコの世界遺産に指定された旧市街から天体を観測できる。ベネチアの城塞とフランスやイギリスの建築が並ぶ欧州最大級のエスプラナード広場から見る土星の輪や木星の大赤斑は、この上なく美しい。

CNN presented an amazing video including 60,000 photos of the starry sky of the Greek island of Corfu, taken between 2010 and 2014. The five-minute video entitled “”Corfu Nightscapes — A Company of Stars” was produced by Vasilis Metallinos and John Miliadis.

CNN mentions that Corfu’s tourism organization should thank the two men as this stunning video is the best advertisement for the island while adding that “if you’re not inspired to head to Greece after seeing it, you probably didn’t full-screen this tribute to Hellenic beauty.”

"Noches de Corfú, una compañía de estrellas" va ganando popularidad en internet gracias a la calidad de sus imágenes

El fotógrafo Vasilis Metallinos y el músico John Miliadis se juntaron para producir un maravilloso video que va ganando popularidad en internet gracias a sus impresionantes imágenes. Se trata de un time lapse elaborado nada menos que con 60 mil fotografías de la bellísima Grecia"Noches de Corfú, una compañía de estrellas", como se llama el video publicado en YouTube, fue realizado con imágenes tomadas por Metallinos, quien es fanáticos de la astronomía, entre los años 2010 y 2014.  La música fue compuesta por Miliadis luego de ver las imágenes.Aquí puedes ver el video en pantalla grande y en 4K (configura las opciones).
